Nog geen 18 maanden na het magistrale dubbelalbum Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone is Lucinda Williams terug met een nieuw album. Bijna alle nummers van The Ghosts Of Highway 20 zijn verslagen van persoonlijke ervaringen van Williams die zij had op verschillende momenten in haar leven, verbonden met Interstate 20, die voor het grootste deel loopt van Georgia naar Texas.
The Ghosts of Highway 20 werd medegeproduceerd door Williams, Greg Leisz en Tom Overby en werd opgenomen met Williams' ritme sectie Butch Norton (drums) en David Sutton (bas). Gitaristt Val McCallum is te gast op twee nummers. Bewezen gitaristen Bill Frisell en Greg Leisz zorgen voor indrukwekkende "sonic textures and ethereal tones" die Williams' briljante teksten en sterke voordracht naar een hoger plan tillen.
