Op zijn nieuwe album 57th & 9th grijpt Sting terug naar zijn basis: rock. Van het gevaarlijke Petrol Head tot het anthem-achtige 50.000 en naar de vuige en met stevige gitaren aangezette eerste single Cant Stop Thinking About You. Het album, dat geproduceerd is door Martin Kierszenbaum, is opgenomen met Dominic Miller (gitaar), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) met wie Sting al lange tijd samenwerkt. Ook drummer Josh Freese (bekend van zijn werk met Nine Inch Nails en Guns n Roses), gitarist Lyle Workman en de Tex Mex-band The Last Banderos werkte mee aan het album.“It happened very quickly, very spontaneously,” vertelt Sting over de totstandkoming van 57th & 9th. “My idea always is to surprise myself and the people I'm working with—and, hopefully, the listeners.”

De titel van het album verwijst naar de plek in New York waar hij dagelijks kwam op weg naar de studios in Hells Kitchen. Reizen en in beweging blijven, zijn belangrijke themas op het album. De onderwerpen komen terug in het persoonlijke Heading South On The Great North Road en op het nummer Inshallah dat het verhaal vertelt van een vluchteling op weg naar Europa.“Its about searching and traveling, the road, that pull of the unknown,” zegt Sting. “On this album, we ended up with something thats energetic and noisy, but also thoughtful.”
