Kris Delmhorst is geboren in Brooklyn, New York. Ze is getrouwd met singer-songwriter en producer Jeffrey Foucault en woont tegenwoordig in West-Massachusetts. Zij maakt actief deel uit van de folkscene in Boston. Behalve gitaar speelt zij ook viool, cello, contrabas en piano. Long Day in the Milky Way is haar achtste soloalbum en de opvolger van The Wild uit 2017. Het album is opgenomen in een bijna 300 jaar oude boerderij in Maine met een vrij grote groep vertrouwde musici. Delmhorst schreef de meeste nummers zelf tijdens een retraite in New Hampshire.
